VEGANIC LANDSCAPES

Veganic landscapes is a study of vegan and organic agricultural systems - sustainable and ethical systems of farming. Livestock and their byproducts account for up to 51% to 87% of annual worldwide greenhouse gas emissions (Robert Goodland and Jeff Anhang, World Watch Institute, 2009; Sailesh Rao, Climate Healers, 2019). In addition, animal agriculture, both local and industrial scale, is the leading cause of habitat destruction, deforestation, species extinction, ocean dead zones, and water pollution. My current studies contribute to a book I am writing on environmentalism and sustainable practices that prevent ecosystem collapse.

Research led me to meeting Will Bonsall, a pioneer in veganic farming. He has practiced veganic farming for nearly fifty years in rural Maine. Soil fertility is derived from plant material, not animal waste. Will’s methods are predicated on the concept of ecoefficiency. I highly recommend reading his comprehensive book on veganic farming:

Will Bonsall’s Essential Guide to Radical, Self-Reliant Gardening: Innovative Techniques for Growing Vegetables, Grains, and Perennial Food Crops with Minimal Fossil Fuel and Animal Inputs, Cheslea Green Publishing, 2015
